Job Description

A Senior Engineer/Senior Designer Hydraulic is responsible for undertaking detailed engineering services design, design process management and planning, construction administration, commissioning and hand over services, peer reviews, remediation and fault finding in systems.

The job description of a Senior Engineer/Senior Designer Hydraulic will involve working within the Company’s policies, undertaking engineering design to facilitate the delivery of projects, in both drawn, written and verbal formats.

They will produce detailed performance solutions when the deemed to satisfy requirements cannot be met. They will also administrate the construction of projects including commissioning and handover.

The Senior Engineer/Senior Designer will also accurately verify, test, and ensure fit for purpose any advice that they seek to use within their undertakings. The Senior Engineer/Senior Designer will also undertake consultation with people external to the Company. They shall also understand the detailed fundamentals and functions of all other services, structural services, architectural services, ect and functionality of the project. The Senior Engineer/Senior Designer – Hydraulic will have an ability to strategically access and plan process for complex deliverables, and approach and successfully solve a problem they have not encountered in the passed. They can understand the client needs, drive results, coordinate externally to the organisation to best the project and ensure best value for money.

A Senior Engineer/Senior Designer – Hydraulic undertakes hydraulic engineering design work generally based on the below services, but not limited to;

  • Cold water services
  • Heated water services
  • Non-drinking water services
  • Sanitary plumbing systems
  • Sanitary drainage systems
  • Roof drainage systems
  • Surface and subsurface drainage systems
  • On-site wastewater management systems
  • On-site liquid trade waste systems
  • Natural gas services
  • Liquid petroleum gas services
  • Speciality water systems, sanitary plumbing systems, sanitary drainage systems and on-site treatment systems for healthcare facilities

A Senior Engineer/Senior Designer – Hydraulic shall also be able to consult on the concepts for fire services, civil services, & water & sewer WSC.

Minimum requirements:

  • Senior Engineer/Senior Designer Hydraulic should have at least one of the following qualifications:
    • A bachelor degree in engineering, or
    • Masters degree in building services, or
    • Masters degree in engineering, or
    • Diploma of Engineering, or
    • Diploma of Construction.
  • Senior Engineer/Senior Designer Hydraulic should have at least six years experience in Hydraulic Engineering.
  • Construction supervision experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate good report writing.
  • Must be able to demonstrate project management and stakeholder communication skills
  • Must be able to independently research, critically asses and validate by us of means similar to a sensitivity test.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with use of Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, word, excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Be Sydney based.

Responsibilities of the Senior Hydraulic Engineer / Senior Designer Hydraulic:

  1. Manage and take responsibility for delivering project documentation in accordance with project brief, building & plumbing codes of Australia, relevant Australian Standards, and local authority requirements.
  2. Regular reporting and liaison to the Director – Hydraulic Engineering and project managers, including attendance at internal team meetings to report on the progress of the design.
  3. Strategic planning and delivery of hydraulic systems
  4. Assessment and preparation of complete project briefing compliance and departure registers
  5. Peer review of designs by other team members, interrogating design solutions to ensure full compliance with codes, standards, and project briefs.
  6. Actively participate in the development and improvement of team operations and manage quality control of outputs.
  7. Facilitate co-ordination meetings to resolve design issues between the various consultants and clients.
  8. Write concise project communication and design reports.
  9. Communicate via e-mail, ACONEX, and other web-based project management platforms.
  10. Research appropriate proprietary solutions and ensure that manufacturer’s information that is supplied is suitable for the project.
  11. Take instructions from the Director and other assigned senior staff.
  12. Work within the project design budgets and advise the manager if there is there is a risk of not meeting the budget targets.
  13. Attend site inspections, review contractors work and prepare site inspection reports as required.
  14. Review contractors WAE drawings, RFIs and other requests during construction.
  15. Utilise company platforms including Confluence, Trakstar, Xero and Synergy.
  16. Mentor junior staff in a constructive way by providing feedback to develop skill sets.
  17. Work within the project design budget/programme and advise the director if there is a risk of not meeting the budget targets.
  18. Continue to further educate and attend training sessions as required.
  19. Undertake detailed research and testing of products, processes, innovations including critical assessment and verified outcomes.
  20. Ensure compliance with the engineering drafting standards and company QA procedures.
  21. Assist in drafting when project deadlines require.

Minimum requirements:

  • Civil Engineering degree /Diploma of Civil Construction or equivalent;
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a WSC/Designer;
  • Registered as minimum C2 designer as per the Sydney Water competency standards;
  • Intermediate/advanced AutoCad capability and good understanding of Sydney Water SUDS software application;

The Senior Civil Engineer works in the Civil and Water Engineering team at Warren Smith Consulting Engineers and generally has a minimum of 8 years’ relevant post-graduate industry experience. The Senior Civil Engineer will be able to work independently through substantial tasks under the overall supervision of the Director of Civil and Water Engineering and Project Managers.

Minimum requirements:

  • Civil Engineering degree or equivalent;
  • Minimum 5 years’ post graduate experience;
  • Ability to be registered as minimum C2 designer as per the Sydney Water competency standards;
  • Intermediate/advanced AutoCad capability and 3D terrain modelling software (12D or AutoCAD Civil 3D)
  • A good understanding of pipeline hydraulics related to sewer and water systems (pumped and gravity) and application of the relevant WSA and other industry design codes;
  • Experience in delivering detailed designs and construction documentation, including managing a design team;
