Domestic Hot Water Presentation to AHSCA

Warren Smith & Partners’ Hydraulic Technical Manager, Tom Wise, delivered a very informative presentation on ‘Domestic Hot Water Circulation Systems’ at the AHSCA’s most recent general meeting on Tuesday 9th May.

The presentation covered the basics of domestic hot water circulation systems as well as Tom sharing his knowledge on:

  • The importance of keeping the velocity in the system down to mitigate erosion – corrosion;
  • Common dos and don’ts found in hot water systems such as the sizing the balancing valves and where to locate the hot water return pump;
  • Steps to sizing a domestic hot water circulation system including how to calculate the flow rate and friction loss;
  • Ensuring you select the correct pump to meet your design velocity, including tips on how you can improve where the system curve meets the pump curve; and
  • Information on the range of balancing valves and hot water circulation pumps that are available and what each of their benefits/applications are.

The presentation was well received in the room and opened up debates and discussions within the audience regarding the topic.
